TV PLACEMENT

TV Placement

ON THE WALL OR ON A STAND – WHERE SHOULD YOU PLACE YOUR FLAT PANEL?

This decision really comes down to personal preference. Either you like the idea of your TV hanging on the wall or you don't. However, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

Most flat panel televisions are hung for two reasons – It looks cool, and it helps free up floor space. If the room is small, and space is a premium, hanging might be a good option. When hanging a TV, there are some things to consider. You'll need electricity on the wall to power the TV, and cables will need to be run from your system or cable box/satellite box as well. Unless you have somehow planned for these to be hidden behind the wall, you'll have visible cables running down your wall.

Many people also like the concept of hanging a flat-panel above the fireplace. There are two things to consider here. First, you need to be aware of the residual heat created by the fire place, and make sure it does not affect the television. Second, be aware of the height the set will be hung at. Sit in your couch, love seat, or chair and look at where the TV will be hung. Is it comfortable? Or do you feel like you're straining your neck to look up at it? If above the fireplace truly is the best spot for, consider buying a bracket that can tilt the TV downward – This will help create a better Viewing Angle.

The last thing to consider before you hang – It's rather permanent. You'll most likely have removed some drywall for an electrical outlet and to run A/V cables, and a bracket will be needed, which again means more holes in the wall. Certainly you can move it, but the move will require you to repair the old spot and prepare another.

Of course, your other option is to simply place the TV on a stand. Almost all of today's flat panel sets come with a pedestal stand – a small “base” that attaches to the set. This pedestal stand allows you to place your TV on an existing stand, credenza, or any other furniture piece you desire. It's a quick and easy way to have your set up and running.

In addition, the popularity of flat panel televisions has of course caught the furniture makers eyes, and lead to several new pieces designed specifically for flat panel televisions. The choices are wide, ranging from traditional to contemporary. A quick visit to your local A/V store will open your eyes to the wide range of options. And of course, by keeping your flat panel off the wall, moving it from one location to another is as easy as moving a piece of furniture.
