History of Flanner's
Flanner's Home Entertainment enjoys a 115 year history of providing Milwaukee area families with the best in home entertainment. From our beginnings selling musical instruments to the complete line of home entertainment solutions we carry today, Flanner's is committed to providing the best quality products and superlative customer service.
The story of Flanner's begins in 1891, when Joseph Flanner, a successful New Orleans music retailer, moved to Milwaukee and opened his own store. He sold pianos, band instruments and published sheet music. In 1913 he joined forces with Eric Hafsoos, another Milwaukee music retailer, and Flanner and Hafsoos was born.
Flanner and Hafsoos remained a downtown Milwaukee fixture until 1960, when the business became a part of the new Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa. There has not been a member of the Hafsoos family involved with the business since 1963. The name was retained for its brand recognition and uniqueness until the store was moved to Brookfield in 1994. The name change and move were two of the many changes the business underwent at that time, reflecting the changing technologies and needs of our customers.
The most recent chapter in Flanner’s history occurred in November of 2005 with the opening of a new showcase store only 12 blocks from the old location. This new, single-store location focuses on a solutions-based selling approach that provides the customer with a warm and inviting showroom, unlike any other home entertainment store in the area. Products are displayed in home-like settings and are centered around the experience and solution the consumer is looking for. In addition, the name was changed from Flanner’s Audio & Video to Flanner’s Home Entertainment, and the new “play button” logo was unveiled.

Over the years, Flanner’s product mix has evolved with the way people have enjoyed entertainment in their homes. In 1891, if you wanted to enjoy music in your home, you had to play it yourself. Soon, wind-up phonographs became the rage, followed by radios, record players, stereo components and now the marriage of audio and video – complete home entertainment systems. Through it all, the commitment to staying on top of changing technology and providing superlative customer service has remained constant.
John Flanner, fourth generation president of the company, says that the growing success of his company began with his great grandfather's philosophy over a century ago."We strive to understand lifestyle changes and stay on the edge of what's happening in our constantly changing industry. We provide what people want. We've changed with the technology and the generations, and we'll keep changing to reflect the wants and needs of our consumers."
With a staff of 70+ sales and installation professionals, Flanner's prides itself on helping customers select the right equipment for their needs and budget. "With audio and video products, there are endless options," says Flanner. "Choosing the right equipment can be intimidating. Our biggest edge is our sales staff. No one has the years of experience, knowledge and training that our staff does."
